Product: Virto Alerts & Reminders App
Updated: 2026-09-14

The current Virto Alerts and Reminders app is a SharePoint Framework (SPFx) solution distributed through Microsoft AppSource. It replaces the earlier SharePoint add-in "Alerts for Office 365 by Virto": Microsoft retired all SharePoint add-ins on April 2, 2026, and the SharePoint Store stopped offering add-ins on July 1, 2024. If the earlier add-in is still installed on your sites, see [If the earlier add-in is still installed](#if-the-earlier-add-in-is-still-installed) at the end of this page.

## Before you start

- **Roles.** A SharePoint Administrator (or Global Administrator) adds the app to the tenant app catalog. A Global Administrator grants consent to the Virto Apps enterprise application once for the whole tenant. A site owner can then add the app to a site.
- **Permissions.** The app needs the delegated and application permissions listed on the [Permissions Required for Application](https://docs.virtosoftware.com/docs/alerts-and-reminders-by-virto/installation-and-system-requirements/permissions-required-for-application/index.md) page. Application permissions are used by the background service that watches list changes and sends emails.
- **Licensing.** Ten alerts per site collection are free, and the paid plans can be tried for 30 days. See [License status](https://docs.virtosoftware.com/docs/alerts-and-reminders-by-virto/installation-and-system-requirements/license-status/index.md).
- **Modern experience only.** The app adds a **Virto Alerts** command to lists and libraries in the modern view. It does not appear in the classic view of a list.

## Step 1: Get the app from Microsoft AppSource

1. Open [Virto Alerts and Reminders on Microsoft AppSource](https://appsource.microsoft.com/en-us/product/office/WA200008659).
2. Select **Get it now** and sign in with an account that has the SharePoint Administrator role in your tenant.
3. AppSource opens the **Manage apps** page of the SharePoint admin center with the app selected. Select **Add to Apps site**.
4. In the **Enable app** panel, decide whether to add the app to all sites in the organization. Adding it to all sites means site owners do not have to add it themselves. Select **Add**.
5. If the admin center reports a pending permission request for the app, approve it on the **API access** page of the SharePoint admin center.

The app now appears in the tenant app catalog as **Virto Alerts and Reminders**.

## Step 2: Add the app to a site

Skip this step if you added the app to all sites in Step 1.

1. Open the SharePoint site where alerts are needed and go to **Settings** > **Site contents**.
2. Select **New** > **App**.
3. Under **From your organization**, select **Virto Alerts and Reminders** and select **Add**.

Repeat for every site collection where alerts and reminders will be configured.

## Step 3: Grant consent to Virto Apps

Consent is granted once per tenant, on the first launch of the app.

1. Open any list or document library in the modern view and select **Virto Alerts** in the command bar.
2. The app asks you to sign in and shows the permissions requested by the **Virto Apps** enterprise application. A Global Administrator accepts them with **Consent on behalf of your organization**.
3. After consent, the app opens. If it still reports missing permissions, clear the browser cache or open the list in a private (incognito) window once, then return to the normal window.

A Global Administrator can review or revoke the granted permissions later in the Microsoft Entra admin center under **Enterprise applications** > **Virto Apps**; see [Virto Apps](/virto-authorization-app/). Revoking a permission stops the alerts that depend on it.

## Step 4: Open the app and create the first alert

Open a list or library in the modern view and select **Virto Alerts**. The app opens with the **My alerts**, **All alerts**, **Queue**, and **Settings** tabs. Continue with [Getting Started](https://docs.virtosoftware.com/docs/alerts-and-reminders-by-virto/overview-and-quick-start/index.md) to create the first alert.

Before rolling the app out to other users, an administrator can set the defaults in the **Settings** tab: the **From** and **Reply to** addresses, the default header and footer, and the users or groups allowed to create alerts for other people and external addresses. To use Azure AD groups as recipients, select **Manage Azure AD application** in the same tab. See [Alerts and Reminders by Virto App administration](https://docs.virtosoftware.com/docs/alerts-and-reminders-by-virto/configuration-and-usage/virto-alerts-and-reminder-app-administration/index.md).

## If the earlier add-in is still installed

The add-in **Alerts for Office 365 by Virto** stopped working on April 2, 2026, when Microsoft retired SharePoint add-ins. Opening it shows the Microsoft "Add-In Deprecation Announcement" page instead of the app.

1. Install the new app as described in Steps 1 to 3.
2. On every site where the add-in is installed, go to **Site contents**, open the menu of **Alerts for Office 365 by Virto**, and select **Remove**. Removing the add-in does not delete your alerts.
3. Open a list in the modern view, select **Virto Alerts**, and check the **Queue** tab: the alerts and reminders configured earlier are listed there and continue to run with the new app. Nothing has to be recreated.

If a reminder created with the add-in does not appear in the queue, open it and save it again.

## Deploying in your own Azure subscription

Organizations whose security policy requires applications to run inside their own tenant can deploy Virto Alerts and Reminders into their own Azure subscription instead of using the AppSource version. In that model the permissions are granted to your own Entra ID app registration and no data passes through VirtoSoftware infrastructure.
